Finding Breathwork: A Personal Transformation
In 2020, during the stillness of the pandemic, I stumbled upon a surprising fact: 70% of weight loss occurs through exhalation. This insight piqued my curiosity and opened a doorway into the world of breathwork. Around the same time, I came across the Wim Hof Method, a practice known for its combination of breathing exercises, cold exposure, and mindset training. Intrigued, I decided to give it a try. What began as a casual exploration quickly became a daily practice that transformed my mental, emotional, and physical wellbeing.
The results were undeniable: I felt calmer, more focused, and increasingly resilient in the face of stress. But more than that, I began to notice subtle yet definitive shifts in how I approached life. I realised that my breath had the power to influence not just my state of mind but also my overall health. This sparked a hunger to know more. I wanted to understand the why and how behind these changes—what made breathwork so effective? What was happening in my body and brain? These questions ignited a passion for learning and research that continues to drive me today.
The Journey into Professional Training
I dove headfirst into the world of breathwork, immersing myself in books, podcasts, YouTube videos, and articles by leading experts. Luminaries like James Nestor, Patrick McKeown, and Andrew Huberman became regular fixtures in my learning journey. Their discussions on the science of breathwork—from respiratory physiology to the neuroscience of stress—were both fascinating and inspiring. I found myself not just practicing breathwork but becoming deeply curious about the mechanisms and theories behind it.
This obsession with understanding the breath led me to a pivotal realisation: I wanted to share this knowledge with others. Breathwork had transformed my life, and I felt a calling to help others experience its benefits. With that in mind, I decided to pursue professional training and become a certified breathwork coach. My journey began with foundational training under experts like Scott Townsend, whose holistic approach to breathwork set the stage for my deeper explorations.
The turning point came when I trained with Tom Granger at Aria Breath, where I completed the Mastery Course in Coherent Breathing. This intensive program was rooted in science and evidence-based practices, featuring insights from over 50 global experts in breathwork and neuroscience. The depth of knowledge and practical tools I gained through this training solidified my commitment to sharing breathwork as a powerful tool for health and transformation. Studying Coherent Breathing, in particular, became a cornerstone of my practice, as its rhythmic, resonance-based approach aligned perfectly with my passion for blending science with practical application. And being a DJ, I was of course attracted to the Aria Breath musical library with over 174 tracks designed for coherent rhythmic breathing.
The Origins of Coherent Breathing: Stephen Elliott's Vision
Stephen Elliott’s journey into Coherent Breathing began with his observations of how rhythmic breathing patterns influenced the body’s internal systems. Drawing on insights from engineering and physiology, he identified that breathing at a precise rhythm could create resonance within the body’s systems—much like how a perfectly tuned instrument produces harmonious sound. This resonant frequency, found to be around 5-6 breaths per minute for most individuals, became the cornerstone of Coherent Breathing.
Elliott’s pioneering work revealed that this rhythm maximises the interplay between the baroreflex (the body’s pressure-regulating mechanism) and the autonomic nervous system, promoting relaxation and balance. Over time, Coherent Breathing evolved from an intriguing hypothesis into a widely practiced technique.
The Science of Coherent Breathing
At the heart of Coherent Breathing lies the concept of resonance frequency, where slow, rhythmic breaths create a symphony between the heart, lungs, and brain. Scientific studies have shown that breathing at this rate activates the respiratory vagus nerve, a key player in regulating the parasympathetic nervous system. This activation promotes a state of calm and enhances the body’s ability to recover from stress.
One significant scientific finding relates to Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV measures the variation in time between heartbeats, reflecting the health of the autonomic nervous system. Coherent Breathing has been shown to increase HRV, indicating improved resilience and adaptability to stress. Additionally, research suggests that Coherent Breathing enhances respiratory sinus arrhythmia (RSA), the natural synchronisation between heart rate and breath. This synchronisation supports emotional regulation, making it a powerful tool for managing anxiety and depression.
Mechanisms Behind Coherent Breathing
Coherent Breathing operates through two primary physiological mechanisms:
- Baroreflex Regulation: The baroreceptors, tiny sensors in the blood vessels near the heart, detect changes in blood pressure and communicate with the brain to adjust heart rate. Breathing at a resonant frequency optimises this feedback loop, creating a stable balance between blood pressure and heart rate. This mechanism is akin to a well-tuned thermostat, maintaining the body’s internal equilibrium with precision.
- Enhanced Gas Exchange: Slower breathing increases carbon dioxide (CO2) levels in the blood, which might sound counterintuitive but is essential for proper oxygen delivery. Higher CO2 levels promote vasodilation, improving blood flow and oxygen delivery to tissues. This physiological shift not only supports energy production but also calms the nervous system, reducing the body’s stress response.
Research Backing the Benefits of Coherent Breathing
The benefits of Coherent Breathing are supported by a growing body of research. For example, a study published in the Journal of Behavioral Medicine found that practicing resonance frequency breathing for just 15 minutes a day significantly reduced symptoms of anxiety and depression over eight weeks. Participants also reported improved sleep quality and reduced feelings of overwhelm.
Further research highlights the impact of Coherent Breathing on physical health. Studies show that regular practice can lower blood pressure, improve HRV, and even slow the aging process of the heart. One cardiologist noted that consistent resonance breathing could "reverse the age-related decline of the heart by 10 years." This profound effect underscores the potential of Coherent Breathing as a preventive health measure, making it an invaluable tool for healthcare professionals and wellness enthusiasts alike.
Why Coherent Breathing Matters
What makes Coherent Breathing so powerful is its simplicity and accessibility. In a world where stress and burnout are rampant, this practice provides an immediate pathway to calm, focus, and resilience. It doesn’t require special equipment, a specific location, or hours of time—just your breath. Whether practiced for a few minutes during a hectic workday or as part of a longer meditation session, Coherent Breathing offers profound benefits that ripple across physical, emotional, and mental wellbeing.
The practice acts as a bridge between ancient wisdom and modern science. By harmonising the body’s rhythms, it nurtures both the nervous system and the cardiovascular system, creating a state of balance that supports better decision-making, emotional regulation, and overall health. For me, what stands out most is how Coherent Breathing fosters a sense of connection—not only with oneself but also with others. By activating the ventral vagal pathway, the part of the nervous system responsible for feelings of safety and social engagement, it helps us move beyond survival mode into a state of thriving.
This isn’t just about relaxation; it’s about empowerment. When we master our breath, we master our response to life’s challenges. Coherent Breathing is a tool for resilience and growth, helping us not only recover from stress but also build the capacity to face it with clarity and strength.
Sharing the Gift of Breath: A Mission for Transformation
As a breathwork coach, my mission is to make the transformative power of Coherent Breathing available to everyone. Breath is universal—it transcends age, background, and experience. Yet, so many people remain unaware of its potential to heal, empower, and transform. My role is to guide them on this journey, to share insight into what is possible about their health and wellbeing.
Through workshops, seminars, and one-on-one sessions, I aim to create spaces where individuals can reconnect with their breath and, by extension, their true selves. Events like the upcoming Breathwork Evolution Neuroscience Summit allow me to collaborate with other experts, such as Pete Larking, to deepen our collective understanding of these practices and share them with a wider audience. These gatherings are not just educational—they are transformative experiences that equip participants with tools to integrate into their daily lives as both individuals and professionals.
The potential ripple effect is immense. When individuals learn to regulate their own breath, they influence those around them—creating calmer workplaces, stronger families, and more connected communities. My ultimate goal is to help people unlock this potential, leading to a healthier, more balanced, and harmonious world. Coherent Breathing isn’t just a technique; it’s a movement toward empowerment, connection, and lasting change.

Discovering the Harmony of Qigong: A Journey into Breath, Neuroscience, and Healing
Over 25 years ago, I began a transformative journey into Qigong, inspired by a desire to understand and overcome complex physical, emotional, and spiritual challenges. As a child and young adult, I faced significant health obstacles, affecting my respiratory system and skin. While conventional medicine provided essential support, I sought a deeper, more empowering approach to manage my well-being and regain control of my health. This pursuit became the foundation of my lifelong dedication to holistic healing and self-discovery.
This search for deeper meaning and healing led me to Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In New Zealand, TCM was far from mainstream, but as I began to explore acupuncture, Chinese herbal medicine, Taijiquan, and Qigong, I found myself drawn to the profound synergy within Taoist philosophy and its holistic view of health. These practices didn’t just complement the medications I was taking—they reawakened a sense of vitality and clarity that had been dormant within me.
The Breath of Transformation
I’ll never forget my first true experience of Qigong. During a martial arts class, I was introduced to five flowing, gentle movements. For the first time, my breath moved effortlessly through my body, and a wave of calm swept over me. The agitation and imbalance I had carried for years began to dissipate. It was as though I had come home to myself, and from that moment, I knew Qigong would be a lifelong practice.
This newfound connection with my breath marked the start of an exploration that would eventually bridge the ancient art of Qigong with the modern lens of neuroscience. I became captivated by the question: What is Qigong doing to my brain?
Mentorship and Growth
Throughout my journey, I was fortunate to learn from extraordinary mentors who guided me in the art and science of Qigong.
Adejola Musa Olatunji
Adejola Musa Olatunji, the founder of the New Zealand School of Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine (NZSATCM), was a pivotal figure early in my journey. His encouragement pushed me to begin teaching Qigong, even when I doubted my readiness. He saw potential in me that I couldn't yet see in myself and supported my growth with personal training and invaluable mentorship. Which lead to my first formal qualifications of Diplomas in Acupuncture/Chinese medicine, Tuina, Qigong and Taijiquan plus a health science degree specialising in Acupuncture. Under Tunji's guidance I then moved on to my position as a senior lecturer at NZSATCM teaching Anatomy and Physiology, Functional neurological assessment, Chinese medical specialties, and head of department for Tuina, Qigong and Taijiquan.
Dr. Stephan Yan
From Dr. Stephan Yan, I gained an in-depth understanding of traditional Chinese medicine and its practical applications across multiple disciplines. He taught me foundational systems such as Ba Duan Jin (Eight Pieces of Brocade), Yin-Yang Ba Pan, and Lao Tzu Shao Dan, each emphasizing the intricate interplay of energy flow and physical health. His teachings extended to the art of Tuina, a hands-on therapeutic practice that blends massage with acupressure, and Wu-style Taijiquan, a graceful yet powerful martial art that integrates movement, balance, and energy cultivation.
Dr. Yan also illuminated the profound connections between traditional Chinese medicine and modern neuroscience. He introduced me to the ways TCM principles align with contemporary understandings of the nervous system, inspiring me to explore how the body’s energetic pathways interact with neural networks. This foundation not only shaped my Qigong practice but also ignited my passion for bridging ancient wisdom with cutting-edge scientific inquiry.
Peter Caughey
Peter Caughey, an internationally respected Qigong and Taijiquan teacher, has been one of the most influential figures in my career. Together, we have been working on Qigong teacher training programs in Bali, blending traditional Qigong practices with modern insights. Peter’s encouragement of my introduction of neuroscience into the curriculum has been instrumental in shaping the direction and growth of my career. His openness to innovation and his deep knowledge of the monastery school of Qigong have provided a solid foundation for my work. Our collaboration laid the groundwork for integrating neuroscience principles into Qigong education, creating a bridge between the spiritual and the scientific.
Dr. Michael Corridino
From Dr. Michael Corridino, the founder of Neuropuncture, I gained an advanced understanding of the nervous system and its role in electro acupuncture. Dr. Corridino’s mentorship guided me through certification as a Neuropuncture Practitioner and later as an Instructor, equipping me with the skills to merge functional neurology, with classical TCM principles. His expertise in neurophysiology and neurostimulation has profoundly influenced my clinical approach and teaching career, enabling me to provide targeted, evidence-based treatments and teach Neuropuncture to practitioners all over the world. Our shared focus on bridging the gap between the ancient medical paradigm of Acupuncture into a modern and powerful bioelectric neuromodulating modality has been pivotal in developing tools to address clinical conditions with greater precision and evolve the acupuncture industry into the 21st century.

Additionally, my training at the MARC Institute in Miami, where I participated in full cadaver dissections, profoundly enhanced my understanding of human anatomy, particularly the respiratory system and its physiological connections. This hands-on experience illuminated the restorative mechanisms of Qigong and deepened my appreciation for the intricate relationship between the structure and function of the nervous system. The insights gained through this training now inform both my teaching and clinical practice, adding a new dimension to my ability to address conditions rooted in respiratory dysfunction.
Qigong Through the Lens of Neuroscience
As I explored the research of Qigong's mechanisms, I began uncovering its profound impact on the nervous system. The practices of postural integration, breath regulation, meditation, and movement—core principles found across all Qigong traditions—aligned seamlessly with modern understanding of neural function and rehabilitation.
Qigong's rhythmic breathing and gentle, coordinated movements engage the respiratory, cardiovascular, and neuromuscular systems, fostering a unique interplay between these systems to promote balance and harmony. This mind-body integration enhances neural-muscular coordination, improves circulation, and heightens awareness of bodily sensations—a vital step in building a resilient nervous system.
Research into Qigong and Taijiquan enhances brain health by improving connectivity and integration between the prefrontal cortex, motor cortex, and occipital cortex through long-term practice, which strengthens neurogenic and endothelial metabolic activities, regulates autonomic nervous system via vagus nerve stimulation further supporting Qigong's role in offering therapeutic benefits for stress-related and chronic conditions sympathetic and parasympathetic control, and reorganizes brain interactions to support cognition, memory preservation, and delayed neurological decline.
I recognized that Qigong was not just an ancient art; it was a scientifically robust system capable of regulating and restoring the nervous system to health. Over the years, I developed tools to assess Qigong’s effects on clinical conditions, integrating functional neurology and psychological assessment with classical TCM concepts.
The result of this exploration was the creation of Medical Qigong Neuroscience, a system that combines the timeless wisdom of Qigong with modern biomedical insights.
Sharing the Vision
In 2019, I was invited to Bali by the Forest Rock Qigong Taijiquan School to teach at a Qigong teacher training retreat. This opportunity allowed me to share my research with students eager to explore Qigong’s therapeutic potential. Their enthusiasm motivated me to document and expand my findings, leading to the creation of an online course comprising over 90 videos, clinical examples, and practices designed to bridge TCM and neuroscience.
The course emphasizes the four foundational principles of Qigong—postural alignment, breath regulation, meditation, and movement—presented through both ancient and modern perspectives. It aims to equip practitioners, teachers, and clinicians with the tools to enhance their practice, communicate Qigong's benefits in biomedical terms, and apply its principles in clinical and personal contexts.
A Journey Forward
Qigong has profoundly shaped my life and work, offering not only a path to personal healing but also a means to help others. Through Medical Qigong Neuroscience, I hope to continue sharing the immense potential of this practice with communities worldwide. Whether you are a seasoned practitioner, a teacher, or a clinician, I invite you to explore this transformative art through a new lens—one that bridges ancient wisdom and modern science for a healthier, more harmonious future.
